This past Monday, my handsome husband turned the big 3-5. It seems like just yesterday that we were throwing him a surprise 30th birthday party and now here we are five years later. A LOT has changed in 5 years!!
Matthew was handed a bad deal for his past two birthdays. In 2014 he spent it in bed with a raging stomach virus which swept our entire family and landed on him the morning of his big day. Last year he spent it sitting in the hospital with me while I was admitted for two weeks for complications following my transplant. Not only was he stuck in the hospital on his birthday but he also got stuck completing an online driving class for ME. I had been blessed with a speeding ticket in December and although I had nearly two months to complete the online class, I waited until the last minute to get it done. One of the medications they gave me through my IV made me VERY sleepy. The majority of my two weeks in the hospital were spent asleep. This meant there was no way I could complete a timed driving class and test. So, as always Matthew came to my rescue and spent his birthday taking a four hour driving class while sitting in a hospital room as I slept the day away. What a crappy way to spend your birthday. But, he never complained or made me feel bad. I promised him I would try to make it up the next year.
Two weeks ago we went out to dinner with some of our friends and their kids and I surprised Matthew with a cake in honor of his upcoming big day.
On the way, Kyndall serenaded us with a lovely rendition of her favorite song by Adele. The poor girl inherited her Mama's awful singing voice but that doesn't stop her from belting out the wrong words every single time this song comes on the radio. Which I'm pretty sure is every 17 minutes.
After dinner we did a little bowling....
Cracks me up!!
How to bowl like a drama queen.....
We had planned to make a short trip out of town to a new restaurant we've been wanting to try this past weekend to celebrate but once again this year life threw us a curve ball and plans were cancelled. My Dad called me two weeks ago and said that my Grandmother was in her final days so Kyndall and I packed up and headed to Tallahassee in order to be with her. (More on that in another post)
Even though our plans were changed, it actually worked out well. With my Grandmother's passing, both sides of our families came together and we were able to find time celebrate Matthew's birthday with a big family dinner in Tallahassee. My parents, my sister and brother-in-law as well as Matthew's parents all joined us last Saturday night for dinner, cake and gifts.
Kyndall wore her new deer outfit especially for Daddy
Birthday dinner at Texas Roadhouse in Tallahassee
A few Valentine's Day goodies from Nonie and Poppie before Matthew opened his birthday gifts
His actual birthday was two days later on Monday the 8th and he was celebrated at work with this cool cookie cake. Thanks, Pam!!
That night we went out to eat again, this time to Outback--his choice. I'd say he was well celebrated this year with 3 dinners and 3 cakes!
Afterwards Kyndall gave him his cards and goodies from the two of us
Since he'd had plenty of cake, we got him Phish Food ice cream and brownie brittle---two of his very favorite treats!
Tomorrow we are heading to Memphis so that he can take a stroll around Bass Pro Shop and pick out his own birthday present. I'm not very good at choosing guns and scopes and such so despite how boring it may seem, I'm having him pick out his own gift.
I am so thankful for Matthew's life and for the 35 years he's spent on this Earth. I'm blessed and grateful to have celebrated the last 9 birthdays with him and I hope to celebrate 99 more!
