12 Month Check Up

Today Kyndall had her 12 month well check with Dr. Traynham.  I was anxious for this appointment, since we haven't been to see him since our 9 month well check.  Mostly, I was curious to see how much she weighed.  Just based on the fact that I carry her around all the time, I had estimated her to weigh about 19 pounds.  Looks like I was pretty close!  Here are her stats for today.....

Weight: 18.8 pounds (21st percentile)
Height:  29 inches  (41st percentile)
Head:  17.75 inches (54th percentile)

I know what you're thinking....I have a bobble head baby!  =)  Really, I don't!  She's definitely still pretty tiny, but I was pleased to see that she's no longer hanging out in the 12th percentile area for her weight.

As always, the nurse asked several milestone/developmental type questions, to which I was happy to answer with an excited "YES!".......Except for just one of them.....

Is she eating table food well?  CHECK!
Is she sleeping well?  CHECK!
Is she pooping well?  CHECK AND CHECK!!
Is she drinking whole milk?  CHECK!
Is she drinking from a sippy cup?  CHECK!
Is she throwing things?  CHECK!
Is she saying "Mama" and "Dada"?  CHECK!
Is she using her thumb and index finger to pick up small things, like food?  CHECK!
Does she point or grunt at things she wants? CHECK!
Does she sit and play with her toys and pick them up?  CHECK!
Is she walking?  Nope!! =(

Dr. Trayhnam was very pleased with her today.  He says she has great core strength and beautiful posture. (something she definitely did NOT get from me!)  He isn't concerned at all about the fact that she still doesn't have any teeth.  He said he had one patient who got all 12 teeth in a two week span!  Please, Lord....NOOOO!  He also isn't very concerned with the paci.  He recommends that around 18 months, we start limiting it to naps and nighttime, but until then he's not worried with it.

So, to address the walking issue, he is recommending that we have Kyndall evaluated by a group called Baby Net.  They are a state funded therapy program that is open to anyone in South Carolina, and it's not based on income, but rather based on the child's need.  He checked her leg strength and her resistance and says he truly believes it's more of an "I don't want to" issue than an "I can't" issue.  He says her nerves and muscles are perfectly fine, but there may be some exercises Baby Net can recommend that will help encourage her to start walking.  Whew!  I was glad to hear there wasn't any big concern there, as I have been worried about her lack of interest in walking for a while now.

As always, I have pictures to share!  First, take a look at a few comparison pictures from this time last year, when she went in for her very first visit with Dr. Traynham.

What a difference a year makes!!  A few things have changed since our very first visit, such as holding a peaceful, sleeping baby vs. wrangling a wild toddler who wants to destroy the paper on the exam table and tear it into 2,847 tiny pieces and then eat it.  But one thing that hasn't changed is how much we LOVE our pediatrician.  Dr. Traynham is so wonderful, and he's an outspoken Christian, to boot!  We love him so much!

Oh, how could I forget??  Baby girl got three shots today, and she'll go back for the rest of them at 15 months.  Dr. Traynham suggested we spread it out, as to avoid overloading her with vaccines all in one day.  She did pretty well, with the exception of a few big pitiful alligator tears, as expected.  She got several bright orange Halloween band aids, which she couldn't stand and clearly wanted them OFF!  I was very happy with our visit today!

  1. I guess she is taking after her Aunt Kelly in the walking department. She too had to have a little therapy and it was still 17 months before she decided she no longer wanted to be held when she needed to get somewhere. G Daddy says he predicts she will be a holy terror once she is able to walk....ya'll better enjoy it now!!

    love,
